I wanted to let the folks of Beaufort County know that teaching Chinese to our students in elementary school is positive and well worth the extra funding that might be necessary to continue these classes.
As grandparents of a first-grader at Broad River Elementary School, we can tell you from experience our students are able to use what they are learning in Chinese class. We recently took our granddaughter, Hailey, age 6 and in Ms. Chu's first-grade Chinese class, to Epcot. While at Epcot, we had dinner at the Chinese Pavilion, where to our amazement Hailey began a conversation in Chinese with our server. We were absolutely thrilled to see this happening, and our server was amazed that her pronunciation and usage was so correct. Our server wanted to know which private academy Hailey was attending and was surprised when we told her it was a public school in Beaufort.
We cannot think of a better way to prepare our students to compete in our global society, and we encourage you to visit one of the Chinese classes in the county to see what a tremendous program we have to help our students achieve.
