The Lowcountry, as we know, is a beautiful place to live. However, it is appalling to me that there is so much trash in the ditches along our highways and byways.
Something has to done about this eyesore and environmental nightmare. Surely, some county funds could be used to help keep our area as pristine as possible. U.S. 278 would appear to be kept pretty clean, as is Hilton Head Island. This is probably done because so many visitors drive down Interstate 95 and exit onto U.S. 278 to go to Hilton Head. These visitors probably make a day trip to Savannah. I wonder what they think while driving along S.C. 170, S.C. 315 and U.S. 17?
S.C. 46 is classified as a scenic byway. I didn't realize that all the cardboard cartons, plastic bags and cups were meant to be part of the landscape. We do have a few volunteer groups that pick up trash along short stretches of highway, but this is not nearly enough. My question is what can be done, not what should be done.
