It was gratifying to read Wednesday's editorial, "Mitchelville efforts get well-deserved boost."
The Mitchelville Preservation Project, a locally driven, nonprofit initiative attracting scores of enthusiastic volunteers and donors, is dedicated to bringing the story of the town of Mitchelville to a nation and world thirsty for knowledge about the lost history of the American Civil War and Reconstruction Era.
Continuing support from the Town of Hilton Head Island and Beaufort County is indicative of their confidence that the reconstructed town of Mitchelville can and will become a reality. As the Mitchelville Preservation Project moves to create plans of action, with input from all stakeholders locally and nationally, we trust that the residents of Hilton Head Island and Beaufort County will continue to support this grand, and admittedly ambitious, initiative with their time, talent and treasure.
The editorial is reminiscent of a quote from the Dalai Lama: "Unless each individual develops a sense of responsibility, the whole community cannot move forward." Early and continuing support from every resident of the Lowountry surely will elevate the preeminence of the region and the state of South Carolina, both nationally and internationally.
May God continue to bless the Mitchelville project, as we look forward to another great year of progress in advancing plans to reconstruct for America the town of Mitchelville on Hilton Head.
