The editorial cartoon by R.J. Matson in the March 3 Packet should raise the ire of taxpayers.
Matson depicts an elephant and a mule kicking the Social Security and Medicare entitlement can down the road, thus avoiding the responsibility of dealing with federal spending issues. The notion that Social Security and Medicare are entitlements, in the negative sense of the word, is false. Liberal media and politicians imply the taxpayers who funded these programs don't deserve the benefits.
Welfare, food stamps, Medicaid and housing allowances paid to the poor, illegal immigrants and irresponsible folks are entitlements. The outrageous government service union pensions and medical benefits that we fund are entitlements. Our meager Social Security and Medicare benefits are not. We funded our Social Security and Medicare benefits, as well as the benefits of those who came before us. Using inflation-equalized dollars, we will never live long enough to get back what we put in.
Beware. The entitlement attack is just another salvo fired against older Americans. New organ-transplant protocols discriminate against older Americans. Social Security recipients got no cost-of-living adjustments during the past two years.
Socialized medicine in Canada and England, the model for Obamacare, discriminates against older citizens. They get bumped down the waiting list for life-saving and life-improving treatments. Older Americans should just do their duty -- and die.
Is there salvation? Yes. Ask the right questions. Then vote those politicians with the wrong answers out of office.
