Residents of the greater Hilton Head Island area are painfully aware of the difficulty in finding a sponsor for the Heritage golf tournament.
Perhaps I don't have a grasp on corporate America any longer, but where are the new national powerhouses, such Apple, Microsoft, HP, Dell, Intel, Toyota, Exxon, Bank of America and ING to name a few? Isn't this area crawling with BMW, Lexus and Mercedes autos? Where is South Carolina's BMW? What about Georgia's Coca-Cola? Don't they sell their products at every event on the PGA Tour?
These companies should be ashamed of themselves. Their products are used in great quantities in the Lowcountry and all over America. I won't mention the millions of dollars these companies spend on incredibly stupid, 30-second TV ads for the Super Bowl. These companies wouldn't even miss the fee when they report their earnings.
My conclusion is this: Either the people working to find a partner have not put together an appropriate sales-marketing program that appeals to potential sponsors or these major companies have decided the Heritage tournament is too small and insignificant among the PGA Tour events. It also would help if the best and most famous golfers in the world would step up to the plate and play at the Heritage.
