We were delighted to read a recent story in the Packet announcing the appointment of Maestro John Morris Russell as the new principal guest conductor of the Hilton Head Symphony Orchestra.
We lived more than 35 years in Cincinnati and were subscribers to the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra concert series. We can vouch for the talents of Russell, both as a conductor and as a leader engaged with the community. While he was associate conductor of the Cincinnati orchestra, we heard him lead several inspired concerts. He also provided some innovative programming for special concerts, e.g. the annual New Year's Eve concert. He certainly was involved with the community in many ways, even though he was not originally from the city.
We are confident the Hilton Head orchestra board has made a wise choice and patrons will be rewarded by Russell's energy and talents. We are also sure the Hilton Head Island community will come to like his personal energy and engagement with us.
We have enjoyed the orchestra under Mary Woodmansee Green. She has brought it to a high level. We thank her for her tenure and look forward to continuing growth and excellence under a new leader. Hopefully, the greater orchestra community can rally together as we look forward to a new era together.
