Enough is enough; let's move on.
These comments are directed to the misnamed Save Our Symphony Committee, which now appears to be the Scuttle Our Symphony Committee.
I am in my fourth year as a Hilton Head Symphony Orchestra board member. No one admires Mary Woodmansee Green as a person, musician and maestra more than I do. I voted to extend her contract, but the majority of the board voted otherwise. I was disappointed, but my allegiance lies with the orchestra. The decision was made, and I will live with it.
If all of the 600-plus people who signed the committee's petition had been season subscribers and donors to the orchestra for the last few seasons, we would have sold out every concert and have no financial worries. Where have they been?
I will continue to support the orchestra by my efforts on the board, my concert attendance, my financial support and in any other way I can.
Over the past 12 seasons, Mary Green has been instrumental (no pun intended) in making the orchestra one of the brightest constellations in the Lowcountry skies, and in my opinion, she has been its brightest star. There are many stars in the sky, however, and it has been decided to search for a new star. I will support the effort but will always remember Mary as the sun.
From this point on, the committee's current approach will only hurt the orchestra. I hope they will get back on board and continue our extraordinary musical journey.
