There was a good article in your paper about litter in the median along U.S. 278 in the Bluffton area. However, litter in the median is just part of the problem.
The S.C. Department of Transportation does an extremely poor job of maintaining the median in general. They mow the grass three or four times a year, which is extremely inadequate. The grass grows to about three feet tall before it is mowed, and when it is mowed, large clumps of cut grass remain in the median, and it looks horrible. The SCDOT doesn’t even bother to pick up the litter prior to mowing. They just mow over it, chopping it into thousands of pieces.
In the past few years, I have communicated these concerns to Bluffton Mayor Lisa Sulka, asking her if anything can be done to force the state to do a better job of maintaining the median. I also recommended that planting some palm trees and shrubs in the median would improve its appearance. Her response was that maintenance of U.S. 278 in Bluffton is the responsibility of the state, and there was basically nothing the town of Bluffton could do about it.
