Personal responsibility best method against abortion

In “The Abortion Memo” column, David Brooks describes a politically practical and scientific approach on the abortion issue by which he believes the Democratic Party would benefit — essentially give up the insistence on late-term abortions because those single-issue pro-lifers will never budge. And, anyway, technology is illustrating that fetuses are much more “human” earlier in utero that we had previously presumed.

If this pragmatic approach doesn’t rid us of President Donald Trump supporters, as Brooks suggests, how difficult would it be for pro-abortion die-hards to simply recognize that a fetus is a human life — at any stage after conception — and that ending this life creates two victims: the child that might have been and the mother who must bear the onus for the rest of her life? Abortion doesn’t create empowerment for women, personal responsibility does.

Instead of enabling abortion for the convenience of the mother, let’s encourage common sense, caution, and grown-up intention regarding whether or not conception occurs in the first place. It’s not a mystery, and there are many methods to avoid unwanted pregnancy.

Let’s use the wisdom and power of responsibility when it comes to creating a life and discourage the thoughtless, accidental pregnancies that create victims and divide our country.
