Alice G. Howard is a newcomer to local politics, but not local governance. She makes the best choice for the District 4 seat on Beaufort County Council.
Among many other local governmental and civic positions held by Howard over the past 23 years, she has served on the Metropolitan Planning Commission and the City of Beaufort Zoning Board of Appeals.
Equally important is her career, involving 20 years in key positions at Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort. She was environmental director and community plans and liaison officer. That involves rare insight into a leading economic and cultural institution in the county, with knowledge of how it best intersects with the general public. That experience would be good for County Council.
Howard takes the right positions on protecting the environment, a strong suit of incumbent Laura Von Harten for which we are grateful. Howard has a much-needed practical grasp on things County Council does that people truly care about, such as hours at the public libraries and garbage dumps.
Never miss a local story.
Articulate, engaged, smart and well-prepared for this position, Howard would serve residents well.
