An Elgin man was shot in the arm on Saturday after the rifle he was cleaning misfired, according to an incident report filed with the Kershaw County Sheriff’s Department.
The 24-year-old said he was in a shed and had taken out his father’s .22-caliber rifle to clean. The victim was struck by a bullet in the right arm after the rifle he placed in his lap to clean misfired, the report said.
The report said the victim then drove himself to a local emergency room in Camden, where officials determined the bullet had broken a bone in his arm and would need to be fixed with surgery. The victim said he was the only one in the shed when the rifle misfired.
Officers investigating the incident determined it was an accidental shooting.
