A Cassatt man on probation for a previous burglary was arrested after he allegedly broke into an area store over the weekend and stole cigarettes.
Kelrick Wayne Richards, 22, was arrested Monday and charged with one count burglary in the third degree after he broke into the Cassatt Country store on U.S. 1 in Cassatt just before midnight Sunday, Kershaw County Sheriff Jim Matthews said in a statement released Monday.
The suspect, who was captured on surveillance video, took cigarettes and smokeless tobacco, Matthews said.
Richards was out on probation from a previous burglary committed in 2013, Matthews said. Richards agreed to come to the sheriff’s office where he initially denied having committed the crime.
Investigators then went to Richards’ home where he lives with his mother and brother. There investigators found the stolen cigarettes and clothing worn during the burglary after Richards’ mother allowed investigators to search the home. Richards then admitted his involvement, Matthews said.
Richards was taken to the Kershaw County Detention Center where he is waiting for a bond hearing.
