A suspect is in custody in the deadly shooting Tuesday afternoon on Ervin Street, near Two Notch and Harrison roads in Columbia, police say.
The Columbia Police Department tweeted shortly before 8 p.m. that they had taken Christopher Demetric Robinson, 35, into custody. He was wanted on charges of murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime.
Richland County Coroner Gary Watts earlier Wednesday identified the victim as Heyward S. Jackson, 28. He was pronounced dead at Palmetto Health Richland from complications of multiple gunshot wounds to the upper body, according to Watts.
Wednesday morning, Columbia Police identified a murder suspect wanted in connection the shooting.
Officers were called to the scene of the fatal shooting around 4:30 p.m. Tuesday afternoon.
“An officer on routine patrol in the area was flagged down by people at the scene,” Jennifer Timmons, a Department spokeswoman, said.
When the officer arrived, he found people giving aid to the victim, Timmons said.
The man was taken to a local hospital where he died, Timmons said.
Timmons said the initial investigation indicated that Robinson and the victim were arguing,
“Robinson allegedly shot the victim several times and left the scene towards Center Street with an unidentified female,” Timmons said.
Timmons said officers set up a perimeter, including a K9 track, to search for the shooter.
“Investigators continue to determine a motive, but they do not believe this was a random act of violence,” Chief Skip Holbrook said. “The victim was aquainted with the shooter.”
