Elections officials won't declare a winner in the write-in race for the District 4 Beaufort County school board seat Tuesday night because those votes will have to be counted manually, according to county elections director Marie Smalls.
Lundy Baker and Joseph Dunkle are vying for the seat to represent Port Royal and part of Beaufort, but they likely will have to wait at least until Wednesday to find out the tally, Smalls said.
Their race is the only one in Beaufort County with two write-ins running only against each other. It would be difficult to count those ballots Tuesday because of the office's other duties on election night, including a review of all electronic and mailed-in absentee ballots filed during the past month, Smalls said.
The election includes at least three other write-in candidates: Lynn King for County Council District 8, Brian MacDermant for County Council District 4 and Terry Thomas for school board District 2. However, each of these write-ins faces opponents who will appear on the ballot, so initial results Tuesday night could indicate whether the ballot candidate or write-ins secured the majority.

The county Board of Canvassers will certify local election results at 10 a.m. Friday at the elections office at 15 John Galt Road in Beaufort.
