The Beaufort County Board of Elections & Registration has started mailing new voter identification cards, according to a news release.
Changes to boundary lines and reapportionment made it necessary to reissue voter identification cards, as seven new precincts and four new polling locations were added, the release said. New registration cards will identify voters' district information, along with the polling location and its address.
However, the cards cannot be used in place of required photo IDs, unless voters claim a "reasonable impediment" to explain why they lack one.
Voters must bring one of five approved photo identifications to the polls:
Never miss a local story.
- a South Carolina driver's license,
- a South Carolina Department of Motor Vehicle ID card,
- a voter registration card with a photo,
- a U.S. military ID card, or
- a U.S. passport.
The mailing of new voter ID cards began Monday. Those who do not receive one by June 7 can locate their polling place online at scvotes.org. Voters can also check with the county elections office by calling the Beaufort location at 843-255-6900, the Bluffton location at 843-255-6940 or emailing firstname.lastname@example.org.
