In-person absentee voting for the June 10 primary elections opened Monday in Beaufort and Jasper counties.
Those who already have registered as absentee voters can now cast their ballots at each county's elections offices weekdays until June 9.
Beaufort County absentee voters can cast ballots at the Board of Elections and Registration offices at 15 John Galt Road in Beaufort and at 61-B Ulmer Road in Bluffton.
Absentee voting is available from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday at both Beaufort County offices until the June 10 election. On June 9, voting will be available from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at both locations.
Jasper County absentee voters can vote at the Elections and Voter Registration office at 1506 Grays Highway in Ridgeland. Voting is available from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday until June 9.
The June primary election features Democratic and Republican contenders for several local, state and national elections, including the race for the state's two U.S. Senate seats.
In Beaufort County, Republican County Council members Paul Sommerville of Lady's Island, Jerry Stewart of Sun City Hilton Head and Stu Rodman of Hilton Head Island will face GOP challengers Jim Bequette, Stephen Bacon and Lauren Martel, respectively. Beaufort County Board of Education member Jim Beckert will not seek reelection; instead, he will face businessman George Wright for the Republican nomination for county auditor.
In each of these races, candidates face only Republican primary opponents and will not likely be opposed in the Nov. 4 general election.
In Jasper County, several Democrats will face opposition in the June primary. County Council members Theodus Drayton and Martin Sauls will face Leon Smith and Samuel Gregory. S.C. Rep. Bill Bowers will face Curtis Brantley, and Probate Judge Albert Buster Kleckley Jr. will face Rodney Brown.
The primary also will include Democratic and Republican candidates for the U.S. House of Representatives District 6 seat, currently held by U.S. Rep. Jim Clyburn, D-Columbia, which includes Jasper County and a sliver of northern Beaufort County. Clyburn will face Democrat Karen Smith in the primary, and candidates Anthony Culler and Leon Winn will square off on the Republican ticket.
