Ashley Landess, executive director of the SC Policy Council, has canceled a Beaufort appearance scheduled for Monday evening because of illness.
The speech was to be mere days after S.C. House Speaker Bobby Harrell suspended himself from office after being indicted on nine charges, stemming in part from complaints filed against him by the watchdog organization.
Landess and John Crangle, executive director of Common Cause South Carolina, filed a complaint against Harrell in 2012.
Harrell, R-Charleston, was indicted Wednesday on two counts of misconduct in office and seven violations of the state's ethics law. Among those charges were allegations he used campaign money for personal use, reimbursed himself for flights he never took and filed false campaign disclosure reports.
Never miss a local story.
Landess has been speaking out since the indictment, advocating for ethics reform, including repealing the current ethics law and incorporating it into the state's criminal code.
