Two people were airlifted after vehicle wrecks in Bluffton and on Hilton Head Island over the weekend.
In the first, a motorcyclist was seriously injured in a wreck at the intersection of S.C. 170 and Bluffton Parkway on Saturday, according to a Bluffton Police Department spokesman Maj. Joseph Manning.
The motorcyclist was attempting to make a left turn onto Bluffton Parkway from S.C. 170 around 6 p.m. when he turned in front of a vehicle traveling north on S.C. 170, Manning said.
The motorcyclist, Ronald Cofall, was airlifted to Savannah Memorial Medical Center, Manning said. Cofall was listed in critical condition Monday, hospital spokesman Michael Notrica said.
The driver of the vehicle and a passenger were both transported to Coastal Carolina Hospital with minor injuries, Manning said.
The wreck shut down S.C. 170 for almost two hours, according to the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office Traffic Management Division.
The accident is still under investigation, but the preliminary findings are that the motorcyclist failed to yield to oncoming traffic, Manning said.
Late Sunday night, a second person was airlifted to the hospital after a three-vehicle wreck on U.S. 278 near Windmill Harbour, Hilton Head Fire and Rescue spokeswoman Joheida Fister said.
The three-car wreck near the U.S. 278 and Jenkins Road intersection occurred around 8:50 p.m. Sunday, Fister said. Two people in one of the cars were taken to the hospital by ambulance. A fourth person involved did not require hospitalization.
Traffic eastbound onto Hilton Head was blocked as rescue personnel worked at the scene. Firefighters were on site for nearly three hours until 11:50 p.m., Fister said.
