A woman driving behind a minivan that struck and killed a Hilton Head Island jogger Saturday morning said the light was green when the man ran out in front of traffic, according to a Beaufort County Sheriff's Office report.
No charges will be filed against the driver, according to S.C. Highway Patrol spokeswoman Hannah Wimberly.
The woman driving behind the 2000 Honda Odyssey minivan, a nurse, tried to help the jogger, 73-year-old Merlin Stacy Keller, until EMS arrived, the report said. Keller died on the way to the hospital, fire officials said.
A deputy driving on William Hilton Parkway saw Keller stutter-step as he attempted to cross the eastbound lane of the parkway at the intersection with Jarvis Park Road, the report said.
The deputy saw Keller accelerate when he realized there was oncoming traffic, according to the report.
Keller was unresponsive when the deputy approached him seconds later, the report said.
Hilton Head resident Leigh Liptak, 38, was driving the minivan and was uninjured, the report said.
