A 73-year-old Hilton Head Island man was struck and killed by a car Saturday morning while jogging near U.S. 278 on the island, according to the Hilton Head Island Fire & Rescue Division.
EMS planned to airlift the victim, Merlin Stacy Keller, to a hospital, but he died while en route to the airport, according to division spokeswoman Joheida Fister and Beaufort County Deputy Coroner David Ott.
Keller was struck about 8 a.m. at the intersection of U.S. 278 and Jarvis Park Road, according to the S.C. Highway Patrol. A 38-year-old Hilton Head woman was driving a 2000 Honda Odyssey east on the highway when she hit Keller, who was in the roadway, Sgt. Bob Beres said.
The driver was not injured. Eastbound lanes of U.S. 278 were blocked for more than an hour and a half as the scene was cleared.

Beres said there was no other information available Saturday afternoon, pending an investigation.
