A 20-year-old Hilton Head Island man was charged with driving under the influence after he drove his truck into a Palmetto Dunes lagoon Saturday, according to the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office.
Soon after Alex Gilleland left a home in Palmetto Dunes about 7:30 a.m. in his Ford F-150, he struck a mailbox and ran into a lagoon at the intersection of Carnoustie Road and Ocean Lane, according to Sheriff's Office Sgt. Robin McIntosh and the Town of Hilton Head Island Fire & Rescue Division.
When firefighters arrived, Gilleland and his teenage passenger had been helped from the truck and were not injured, McIntosh said.
The Sheriff's Office dive team and a towing company removed the truck from the lagoon, where it was submerged about 15 yards from the bank, McIntosh said.
Gilleland was also charged as a minor in possession of alcohol. The incident remains under investigation.
