Work began Tuesday to repave Argent Boulevard, a pockmarked road that runs from S.C. 170 in Okatie to U.S. 278 behind the Walmart Supercenter, according to the S.C. Department of Transportation.
Crews will work on the project daily for several weeks, depending on the weather, said Toby Wickenhost, DOT acting resident construction engineer for Beaufort County. The road will remain open, though traffic will be slowed, he said.
After work on Argent Boulevard is completed, crews will repave two portions of U.S. 278, starting with a 2-mile stretch from the Jasper County line to S.C. 170, according to the DOT. The DOT will then repave a mile of the highway east of Gumtree Road on Hilton Head Island. Work will finish with repaving Old House Road in Ridgeland, Wickenhost said.
All of the roadwork combined will cost a total of about $5.7 million, according to Beaufort County spokeswoman Joy Nelson. It must be completed by Sept. 30, but Wickenhost said the contractors hope to finish earlier.
