U.S. 17's southbound lanes in Jasper County were shut down for hours on Friday after a tractor trailer carrying hazardous materials overturned, the SC Highway Patrol said.
The truck wrecked around 9:30 a.m. south of Hardeeville between S.C. 170 and S.C. 315, Senior Trooper Hannah Wimberly said. The truck's driver called for hazardous materials response, so troopers could not immediately approach the scene, she said. The Levy Volunteer Fire Department handled the assessment of the truck and determined none of the cargo spilled.
Wimberly declined to comment on what the truck was carrying. Attempts Friday to reach Levy Fire Chief Doug Graham were unsuccessful.
The southbound lanes of U.S. 17 were reopened around 4:30 p.m., about 7 hours after the wreck.
