The Beaufort County Sheriff's Office is searching for a suspect who led deputies on a chase in a stolen car early Thursday.
A deputy was driving east over the Hilton Head bridges at about 3 a.m. when a white 2011 Dodge Ram passed him at more than 100 mph, Sgt. Robin McIntosh said. The deputy followed the truck until both stopped at the Squire Pope Road traffic light, where the officer noticed what might have been fresh damage to the front of the truck, McIntosh said.
The deputy turned on his siren and lights at the Cross Island Parkway, but the suspect continued driving, made a U-turn and led the officer on a chase off the island, McIntosh said. At the intersection of U.S. 278 and Buckingham Plantation Drive, the suspect tried to turn left but struck a tree on the side of the road.
The suspect, a black male, ran out of the passenger side of the car, McIntosh said. Deputies and a tracking team were not able to locate him and had not identified him as of Wednesday afternoon.
Soon after the incident, the suspect's car was reported stolen out of Hardeeville, McIntosh said.
