A Bluffton man was charged with driving under the influence after he rolled his car over on its side Sunday, according to the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office.
A witness trailing the 20-year-old man's Honda Civic at about 9:20 a.m. watched as the driver swerved along Alljoy Road and Thomas Newton Drive, according to a report. The man eventually ran off the right side of the road, striking a ditch and a tree before the car turned onto its side, the report said.
The witness and two other people nearby watched the man crawl out of the car and try to push the car over, the report said. The man told them he did not want to go to jail and that he just wanted to go home, the report said.
The man told deputies through an interpreter he had smoked marijuana and drank the night before, and deputies smelled alcohol on his breath, the report said. After he was taken to Hilton Head Hospital to treat his injuries, he was arrested and taken to the Beaufort County Detention Center. A search of his clothing produced a one-ounce bag of marijuana from a hidden pocket, the report said.
The man was charged with DUI, possession of marijuana and not having a South Carolina driver's license, according to the report.
