Traffic headed east on U.S. 278 from Bluffton to Hilton Head Island was backed up for more than three hours on Tuesday because of road maintenance.
Road workers with the S.C. Department of Transportation had the right-hand lane blocked off with traffic barrels on the east side of the second bridge starting around 11 a.m., according to Beaufort County traffic cameras and driver reports.
The closure was necessary to allow crews to repair damage along the shoulder of the roadway, according to Sophia Bradford with SCDOT.
A series of holes on the shoulder were filled with a concrete-like substance, she said.
Never miss a local story.
The barrels were removed about 2:25 p.m., and all lanes were reopened.
About that time, the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release that maintenance near the bridges had been completed for the day.
Waze users driving in the area reported that traffic was backed up as far back as Tanger Outlets 2 while the lane on the bridge was closed.
There were not any traffic accidents related to the bridge traffic slowdown, although an accident on U.S. 278 near Simmonsville Road in Bluffton did slow traffic there around 2 p.m. Tuesday.
Bradford said SCDOT will likely be back out along U.S. 278 early next week to strengthen the erosion repair work with asphalt.
