Sheriff's officer under investigation after fight

The Beaufort County Sheriff's Office is investigating one of its own after a fight over the weekend between a deputy and his ex-fiancee, Sheriff P.J. Tanner said.

Investigator Louis Novak filed a sheriff's report Sunday after a fight on Hilton Head Island between him and a 24-year-old Hardeeville woman.

Tanner would not comment on specifics of the investigation.

Novak will remain on duty during an internal affairs investigation and a criminal investigation being conducted by sheriff's deputies from northern Beaufort County, Tanner said. Novak works in southern Beaufort County.
