No fireworks on July 4, just some run-of-the-mill calls for police, rescue teams
It was a tame Fourth of July weekend, with nearly all police and emergency officials citing no major problems or incidents Monday. But there was still some of the usual revelry that ended in arrests and rescues.
In all, police charged 18 people with driving under the influence, three on drug possession charges, 17 for alleged public disorderly conduct, one with public drunkenness and five with driving with an open container during the three-day weekend, according to the Beaufort County Detention Center jail log.
Among the reports:
• A 23-year-old North Augusta woman and a 27-year-old Augusta, Ga. man were arrested early Monday morning after police found them drunk, asleep and hanging out of their car parked at a North Forest Beach Drive hotel on Hilton Head Island. Beaufort County Sheriff's deputies had difficulty waking the couple, who were sound asleep in "awkward positions," the report said. The couple awoke confused about where they were and told deputies they had been drinking on the beach all Sunday afternoon and were tired. After a few moments, the two became agitated and began cursing loudly. They were arrested and charged with public disorderly conduct, the report said.
• Beaufort and Port Royal firefighters treated six people for minor injuries Saturday at a first aid station set up at The Sands in Port Royal, Beaufort Fire Department Lt. Dan Byrne said. He said most of the injuries were foot lacerations. Firefighters also put out two small brush fires at The Sands caused by fireworks, he said.
• A Beaufort couple had to be rescued Sunday by U.S. Coast Guard helicopter after their personal water craft became stranded on an oyster bed near Fripp Island, rescuers said. The man cut his foot on the bed after trying to free the craft.
• A 25-year-old Hilton Head man was taken to Hilton Head Hospital at about 2:30 a.m. Saturday when he was struck in the face with beer bottles after getting into an argument with another man at an island night club. The bouncer of the club said he tossed the two men out of the Lagoon Road nightspot after they began arguing. Once in the parking lot, one man threw two beer bottles at the other, causing a cut and swelling to the man's face. The suspect then ran away, a Sheriff's Office report said.
• A 22-year-old Charleston man was arrested Sunday at about 3:30 a.m. when he refused to stop cursing at a Beaufort County Sheriff's deputy, a sheriff's office report said. The deputy had arrived to assist with a S.C. Highway Patrol traffic stop on Arrow Road on Hilton Head. He told the man to be quiet and wait for his ride to pick him up. The man then tried to walk home against the deputy's request. He was arrested for public disorderly conduct, the report said.
• A 23-year-old Lexington, Ky. man and 21-year-old Alton, Ill. man were taken to the Hilton Head Hospital emergency room after they told deputies two men walked up to them on the beach and hit them over the head with glass beer bottles, a Sheriff's Office report said. The two male suspects then ran away. No arrests have been made in the case.
