A severe thunderstorm Friday caused $2,000 in damages to a Bluffton home after lightning struck its roof and sparked a fire, a Beaufort County sheriff's report released Sunday said.

The owner of the home on Big Oaks Street said she heard a loud bang at about 5:30 p.m. and noticed smoke coming from the ceiling, the report said.

Firefighters put out the blaze quickly before it spread, the report said.

Several local homes have been hit by lightning over the past two months, causing thousands in damages.

At least one person has been hit by a bolt during those storms. The Bluffton man was struck in May and was not seriously injured.
