Inmate dies in apparent suicide at county jail

An inmate at the Beaufort County Detention Center died Friday in an apparent suicide, detention center director Philip Foot said Saturday.

The Beaufort Police Department is investigating the death, which occurred about 1 p.m. Chief Matt Clancy declined to release further details.

The body has been taken to the Medical University of South Carolina for an autopsy, coroner Ed Allen said.

The following reports were released Saturday by the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office.

Beaufort

Property Damage

• Riverchase Boulevard, the Oaks at Broad River: Scratch marks found on a motorcycle in the parking lot. Damage: $200.

Burton

Theft

• Jefferson Street: A Craftsman string trimmer worth $135 stolen from the front porch of a home.

Hilton Head Island

Property Damage

• New Orleans Road, Heritage Academy: A rear window at the school broken. Damage: $500.

• Southwood Park Drive, Hilton Head Gardens: Two holes punched in apartment's sheetrock wall. Damage: $250.

Theft

• North Forest Beach Drive, Coligny Plaza: Rented bicycle worth $100 stolen.

• South Forest Beach Drive, Tiki Hut: A backpack containing a wallet, cell phone, keys, and credit cards worth $154 stolen after it was left on the ground next to the bar.

St. Helena Island

• Theft

Sea Island Parkway: $63 in cash stolen from the Moon Store.
