More than 30 arrested on pot, alcohol charges near Snoop Dogg concert
More than 30 minor drug and alcohol charges were issued Sunday stemming from arrests at and around a Snoop Dogg concert on Hilton Head Island, the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office said Tuesday.
In all, 15 adults and four juveniles were charged with simple possession of marijuana. There were six arrests for possession of alcohol by a minor, three arrests for possession of tobacco by a minor, four arrests for open container of alcohol, and one arrest for possession of Xanax. Four warrants also were served to two people, sheriff officials said.
Snoop Dogg, 37, whose real name is Calvin Broadus Jr., has made no secret of his penchant for pot and alcohol.
He's made a career out of it.
But members of the Beaufort/Jasper Multi Agency Drug Task Force didn't target the concert or those attending, sheriff's Lt. Joey Woodward said Tuesday. Deputies were there after being asked to help with traffic and crowd control, he said.
"People were just lighting up joints in front of our undercover officers," Woodward said. "We were walking around the area, and we'd see this and usually find a small bag of marijuana in their pockets after we'd arrest them."
The total amount of how much pot was seized was not available, but Woodward said it would be relatively small.
More than 1,300 attended the 90-minute show at the Shoreline, manager Anthony Marzbanian said.
"It was one of our more behaved shows," he said. "We really didn't see any problems inside the club."
Marzbanian said he has worked with Snoop Dogg for three other shows across the state and had no problems or arrests following those concerts. Most of the arrests Sunday were in nearby parking lots, he and officers said.
"It was a great show," he said. "Even though people were expecting the worse, it didn't happen. I think even the naysayers would welcome him back."
