New hamburger joint coming to Bluffton
A Virginia-based burger chain known for its hand-cut fries and cult-like following is coming to greater Bluffton.
Five Guys Burgers and Fries will open at the Best Buy-anchored shopping center on U.S. 278 by the end of the year.
The fast-casual burger restaurant will open in about 2,400 square feet of the 10,000-square-foot out-lot building recently constructed at the center, according to developer Stafford Properties.
"It's a tremendous growth area," said Maryanne Smith, the restaurant's franchisee for coastal South Carolina and Georgia. "The area itself is so conducive to a Five Guys."

The chain has about 295 restaurants. Smith's group has one in Brunswick, Ga., and is opening one in downtown Savannah. The Bluffton restaurant will be its third.
Smith expects to hire 25 to 30 people to run the Bluffton restaurant, which will be open from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. every day.
Five Guys will open in November or December, ahead of the Christmas shopping season, Smith said.
The Five Guys menu is simple. Fries are the only side dish, and there's only one size of soft drink, according to the company.
Sandwiches include burgers, hot dogs and grilled cheese. Each comes with options for 15 different toppings for free.
"We cut (vegetables) for hours and hours in the morning," Smith said.
Despite being a chain, Five Guys has earned praise in publications like New York magazine, Atlanta magazine and Philadelphia magazine for being among the best burger values in those cities.
Five Guys is the first restaurant addition to the Best Buy center. Other tenants include Petco, Carolina First Bank, Dollar Tree and GNC.
The shopping center is on U.S. 278 east of S.C. 46 and next to The Crescent. A traffic signal was recently turned on to allow easier access to both the Best Buy and Home Depot centers. More leases are under negotiation, said Will Euart, the Best Buy center's leasing manager.
