You missed a spot! Irate 76-year-old rams car wash manager over soiled white-wall tires
A 76-year-old Hilton Head Island man, dissatisfied with the job a car wash did on his ride, allegedly rammed the wash's manager with the vehicle and backed into another car in an attempt to re-enter the tunnel for a more thorough cleaning, according to a report from the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office.
Manager Brian Fox, 20, said the customer was upset because his $14 car wash didn't remove scuff marks from his white-wall tires. The $14 service at Main Street Auto Wash, 267 William Hilton Parkway, included a tire cleaning service, Fox said. The marks appeared to be permanent, he added.
The customer confronted Fox and demanded he be allowed to re-enter the car wash tunnel, according to the report. The customer then got back into his car and drove in reverse around the car wash, maneuvering past other vehicles in an attempt to re-enter the tunnel, said Fox.
"It was extremely weird," he said.
Fox said there were cars in line to enter both in front of and behind the disgruntled customer. Fox said he stood in front of the customer's car and began waving other drivers in.
The angry customer, who would not move away from the tunnel's entrance, then accelerated onto a piece of car wash equipment before backing into the car behind him-- twice -- leaving a scratch on that vehicle's front bumper, Fox said.
In an attempt to get back into the tunnel, the customer began ramming Fox with his front bumper as the manager.
"He rammed me in the knees with his car three or four times," Fox said. He was not injured and told deputies he did not want to file charges.
The scuffle lasted about 45 minutes, Fox said.
The customer could not be reached for comment. In the report, he told deputies he was not satisfied with thecar wash and denied striking anyone or anything with his vehicle.
He also said he should be given an "increased courtesy" because of his age.
The customer was issued a trespass notice, according to the report, and won't face further charges.
He left without getting the second wash.
