Want to help clean up the May River? Click here to find out how
Eight years ago, Friends of the Rivers began its annual May River Cleanup, which is planned for this Saturday.
That first year, the local group was shocked to find refrigerators, truck tires and roofing materials on the shoreline and in the river. But that's changed in the years since the effort started.
Founding director Nancy Schilling said the group has not found those large objects since the first cleanup, and mostly collects trash and beer cans now.
She's hoping this year's "spring cleaning" draws 100 people or more.
HOW CAN I HELP?
Those who would like direction on what areas need cleaning should meet at the Bluffton Oyster Factory Park on Wharf Street at 8 a.m. The event will last until noon. All participants will receive a T-shirt and free barbecue lunch. Trash bags, gloves and drinking water will be provided. For those who know of areas along the May River in need of cleaning, Schilling said they can gather the trash and bring it to the park later for disposal.
WHAT SHOULD I BRING?
Wear clothes you don't mind searching for trash in. Power boaters are needed to collect bags of trash on the river and bring them back to the park. Those with kayaks are asked to bring them to retrieve trash in the marshes that has blown off docks and boats over the past year. Some kayaks will be available to those with experience.
WHAT WILL I FIND?
There's plenty of plastic, glass and aluminum to collect.
