No drugs found during sweep at high school
The Beaufort County Sheriff's Office did an unannounced, random sweep of Hilton Head Island High School's parking lots and outside areas Monday morning but found no illegal drugs, principal Amanda O'Nan said.
"The only thing we found was one student had tobacco," she said.
The random sweeps have been in effect since she became principal this year, O'Nan said. Monday's sweep was the fourth so far. Two sweeps have been done outside the school and two inside.
No drugs or weapons have been found in any of the sweeps, O'Nan said.
O'Nan said one of the reasons she's doing the sweeps is because of the experiences of her younger brother, who used to attend Hilton Head High.
Bruce Williams was a student at the school in 2004, when O'Nan was still an assistant principal. He saw drugs for the first time in his life inside the boy's bathroom, she said.
O'Nan said officials hear continuously from students that drug use is a problem at the school that needs to be addressed.
