A Yemassee man was arrested Friday night on Hilton Head Island after deputies chased him into an apartment complex and found cocaine and marijuana on him and 4.9 grams of crack cocaine hidden in a room, according to a Beaufort County sheriff report.

Darrell Lewis Hamilton, 24, was standing in the parking lot of Hilton Head Gardens when an officer drove by and recognized he was violating a no-trespassing notice, the report said.

When the officer approached Hamilton, he ran into a nearby apartment and hid, according to the report.

Hamilton eventually emerged and deputies found he had cocaine and marijuana with him, the report said.

A woman came out of a bedroom carrying a purse and agreed to let the deputy search her. A bag containing cocaine fell from the purse, and she was arrested.

Another man at the apartment said Hamilton had stashed a brown bag containing crack cocaine in one of the rooms. The officer found 4.9 grams of crack cocaine hidden in a pink backpack, according to the report.

Among other charges, Hamilton faces possession with intent to distribute crack cocaine within a half-mile of a school.
