Bicyclist killed by car on Hilton Head
A bicyclist died after being struck by a car Monday night on Hilton Head Island, according to the S.C. Highway Patrol.
Elvia Rojas, 63, a native of Costa Rica and a resident of Beaver Lane on Hilton Head, was attempting to bike across three lanes of traffic on William Hilton Parkway at about 7:30 p.m. when she was struck by a 2009 Toyota Camry heading east, according to Highway Patrol Lance Cpl. Bob Beres.
The driver of car, who is from Savannah, told authorities the woman darted in front of his vehicle at the intersection of Gumtree Road, leaving no time for him to stop or swerve, according to a Beaufort County sheriff's report released Tuesday.
The incident remains under investigation, Beres said.
