Second arrest made in Buck Island Road shooting

A second suspect was arrested Thursday in connection with a shooting on Buck Island Road late Oct. 16 that sent one victim to a Savannah hospital, according to a Bluffton Police Department news release.

Jonathan Steve Midence-Olivera, 19, was arrested at about 5 p.m. Thursday and charged with assault and battery with intent to kill and assault with intent to kill, according to the release. He was taken to the Beaufort County Detention Center and released on his own recognizance Friday, according to the detention center log.

On Monday, police arrested Joseph Thomas Velez, 16, who is being charged as an adult on counts of assault and battery with intent to kill, assault with intent to kill, discharging a weapon into a dwelling and pointing a firearm at a person, according to the Beaufort County Detention Center log.

He remains in Beaufort County Detention Center on $175,000 bond, according to the log.

A 911 caller reported hearing a shot fired at about 11 p.m., Oct. 16, near the 200 block of Buck Island Road, according to a Bluffton Police Department release.

Velez got into an argument with a man in his girlfriend's neighborhood over being charged $10 to enter a garage, according to the release. Velez pointed a handgun at the man and threatened him before firing once in the air, the release said. He then fled.

About an hour later, Velez returned to 220 Buck Island Road, allegedly firing six rounds into the garage. One of the bullets stuck a 25-year-old man in the chest, the release said. The victim was taken to Savannah's Memorial University Medical Center with injuries that were not life-threatening. He was released Sunday morning, the release said.

It is unclear what Midence-Olivera's specific involvement in the incident was.
