A Hilton Head Island man attacked by a rabid raccoon last week was able to strangle the animal to death, according to a Beaufort County Sheriff's Office report.
The 67-year-old man was walking back from the dock on Sea Pines' North Calibogue Cay Road at about 8:30 a.m. Aug. 6 when a small raccoon lunged at him, the report said. When the man fell down trying to run away, the animal bit his left calf and hung on until it was choked lifeless, according to the report.
Testing revealed the raccoon had rabies, according to a news release from the S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control. It was the third animal to test positive in Beaufort County this year, the agency said.
Reached Tuesday, the man declined to be named, but said he is recovering after seeking treatment at Hilton Head Hospital.
