A large gator made itself at home on a Sea Pines patio May 8, 2014, but had to be put down when security officers could not relocate it.
"A 10 foot alligator found its way to my patio yesterday," Sea Pines resident David Harris said in an email sent May 9.
Harris, who lives on Old Military Road, snapped photos of the reptilian visitor as it peered through a patio window.
Harris said the alligator casually walked into his backyard and set himself down.
He called Sea Pines security and a responding officer called for backup. They were able to prod the alligator into a neighbor's pool. Because of its size, the officers could not relocate the alligator, and it was destroyed.
The Harrises live about a quarter mile from the nearest lagoon and have not had an alligator visit before.
