A woman was bitten by what she believed was a shark while she and her husband swam Sunday off Coffin Point on St. Helena Island, emergency responders said Monday.
The woman, who had been boating in the area with her husband, was bitten on her foot and ankle, according to Dataw Island security chief Wells Morrison.
The husband contacted the U.S. Coast Guard for assistance and was told to take her to the Dataw Island Marina, where island security, Beaufort County EMS, and Lady's Island-St. Helena Island Fire District firefighters treated her.
Fire district spokesman Lee Levesque said the woman was taken to Beaufort Memorial Hospital, where she was treated and then airlifted to the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston.

Morrison said he could not provide further details about the woman's injury but "heard she was doing fine."
He and other emergency responders said they did not know her name or where she was from.
