The first week of July saw all of us here in Bluffton in a flurry of activities and fun.
On July 3, a group of Bluffton friends gathered at Stock Farm to celebrate with Nedra and Bill Brown for a ground-breaking. The wonderful couple are building their dream house there. Mitch Brown and his sister Lori Brown Kraft are so excited to have their mother and father moving here, as are lots of us. Nedra and Bill have sold their longtime home upcountry in Lexington and can't wait to join in our "state of mind." They will be a wonderful addition to Bluffton.
The Fourth of July Children's Parade was truly spectacular. The weather was wonderful, probably the best it has ever been for the fun. Our intrepid bagpiper Bill Treacy led us down Calhoun Street, playing Yankee Doodle Dandy and lots of other favorite tunes.
Bess and Mike Soper handed everyone a kazoo, a gift from May River Toys. Bess and Mike have just returned from the wedding of McNab and Kiks Reeves in Kansas. They could not say enough about how wonderful it was. Lots of Bluffton was there too, including our Mayor Lisa Sulka and her family.
The Statue of Liberty, alias Pressly Giltner, arrived in the nick of time to help lead us, too. Kathy and Gene Cashman arrived with most of their adorable grandchildren, two of whom made their own costumes of Thomas Jefferson and Abraham Lincoln. Both boys were very impressive -- Mr. Jefferson's wig was laboriously fashioned out of cotton balls, and Mr. Lincoln's stove pipe hat sporting lots of flags with historical events carefully printed on them.
Also there were: Anna Pepper and Jason Hewett with their twin daughters, Addison and Pepper -- they joined the parade with their 10-day-old daughter Vivian; Jane Long; the Vaux family; Pearl Giltner; my grandchildren, Patterson, Campbell and Lili; Lamar Moberly helped with traffic control; Ann Graham with Wes and his family; and so many more fun-loving folks. I think this might have been one of my favorite parades -- at least until next year. Thank you to everyone for coming. Don't miss it next year.
6 strips bacon, diced, cooked, drained on paper towel, save grease
1 Vidalia onion, chopped, fried in the bacon grease till soft
2 15-ounce cans pork and beans
2 tablespoons brown sugar
2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar
4 tablespoons ketchup
Drain grease from onions. Add everything else and stir. Heat, stirring several times. Good with grilled hamburgers or hot dogs. Makes 6-8 servings. Double for a crowd.
