Have you ever been up in a treehouse or built one? I love the thought of having a treehouse way up in the top of my hickory tree. The tree is very tall, probably 25 or 30 feet, or at least it seems so to me. What a great spot it would be for my little house. Of course I will probably never build one, but at the very least I can dream of what it would be like.
Meanwhile, down in Brunswick, Ga., some very clever folks have come up with an idea treehouse lovers might like. There they have built a sort of treehouse called "The Hostel in the Forest." The hostel has nine treehouses you can rent and sleep in. The site looks like a summer camp complete with summer "critters." It is very rustic. Meals are served in a large communal dining room and there are no real amenities, just Mother Nature at her finest. Clothes are optional in the swimming hole. I don't think this treehouse setup is for the faint of heart, but if you hear nature calling, this is the ticket. Go to www.foresthostel.com to see what you are missing, and I will keep looking wistfully at my hickory tree.
* Beaufort's third annual Lt. Dan Week is scheduled for Sept. 9-15 at various locations around Beaufort. This is a fundraising event that benefits The Independence Fund's efforts to help wounded and disabled soldiers from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Actor Gary Sinise will once again make an appearance with his Lt. Dan Band.
Two of the most famous people in the sport fishing world will be there. O'Neill Williams and Flip Pallot, both of whom have popular outdoor programs on television, will be giving all sorts of fishing advice on fly-casting and bass and redfish fishing. Participants will also learn how to tie a variation of the famous Bay Street Bunny. Sounds very intriguing doesn't it?
Never miss a local story.
There also is a golf tournament, a family-friendly Vetpalooza Concert on Sept. 14, and a bike ride and run. The fun-packed weekend ends with the Lt. Dan Band Concert on Sept. 15 at Henry C. Chambers Waterfront Park. I get giddy just thinking about all of the fun. If you would like more information, go to www.ldw3.com.
