Bridges Preparatory School has hired veteran Beaufort educator Kay Keeler as its new assistant academic administrator, the school announced.
A native of Florida, Keeler moved to Beaufort in the 1970s with her husband.
After arriving, Keeler taught at Broad River Elementary School and served as lead teacher and principal of Port Royal Elementary School.
Over the past four years Keeler worked as principal at St. Helena Elementary School.
Never miss a local story.
Keeler retired from Beaufort County Schools in June.
Bernie Schein, interim administrator at Bridges, said Keeler was selected for her expertise in early childhood education.
"We know everything cannot happen at once, but with Kay here, Bridges will become a truly innovative school, delivering great results," Schein said.
Since starting work on Oct. 21, Keeler said she has been impressed with the atmosphere at Bridges.
"Research says that children succeed when autonomy drives their learning," Keeler said. "From what I have seen at BPS so far, we have the perfect setting for that kind of self-learner.
"It is an honor to be asked to be part of Bridges."
Keeler studied elementary and early childhood education as an undergraduate at the College of Charleston and holds a master's degree in educational leadership from The Citadel.
