The Photography Club of Beaufort awarded ribbons and checks to area high school students from a pool of 75 black & white and color nature photographs submitted by their teachers then judged by club members at their March meeting. Awards were presented April 8. Battery Creek students Chelsea Lynn and Jayde Little took second and third place in the photo contest, respectively.
Beaufort Academy student Grace Steward was given an honorable mention.

An Earth Day celebration is 4-7 p.m. April 19 in the Habersham Market Place. It will feature art created from recycled materials by the Boys & Girls Club, Riverview Charter School, E. C. Montessori School, Shanklin Elementary School and Calvary Baptist Church Christian Academy Homeschoolers Association. Graduate students from the University of South Carolina art education department will judge the artwork. Students from Battery Creek High also will participate, including members of the school's Students Against Destructive Decisions and drama clubs. The school's arts department will paint a mural. The Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort Officers' Spouses' Club is accepting applications for merit scholarships to graduating high school seniors and continuing education students pursuing an undergraduate degree. Applicants must be a dependent of an active-duty service member currently stationed at MCAS Beaufort or a dependent of a retired or deceased service member stationed at MCAS Beaufort while on active duty. Of the five Beaufort Academy seventh-graders named as Duke TIP Scholars in the fall, Joe Bhoi and Alexander Mazzeo have been invited to the State Recognition Ceremony by virtue of their test scores on the ACT or SAT this winter. Scholars qualified by scoring at or above the 95th percentile on selected sections of designated standardized tests administered during the sixth or fifth grades.
Spanish I classes will collect soccer equipment and personal hygiene items through April 19 to donate to residents in migrant camps. Details: 843-524-3393
BEAUFORT HIGH SCHOOL
The school's yearbook, "The Talon," was recognized for excellence and featured in the 2013 edition of Jostens' "Gotcha Covered Look Book," celebrating the best in yearbook design and coverage. "The Talon" was one of 425 yearbooks selected from approximately 3,000 by a panel of journalism professionals and award-winning yearbook advisers.
Former track standout and 2002 graduate, Tericka Sanders, who is now a Captain in the U.S. Air Force serving at Offutt Air Force Base in Omaha, Neb., recently visited the school. She serves as part of the National Emergency Airborne Command Post as a communication officer. Since leaving Beaufort High, Captain Sanders has been able to travel the world, but still calls Beaufort home.
BEAUFORT-JASPER ACADEMY FOR CAREER EXCELLENCE
The Culinary Arts program received a grant from the Driving Young America Committee and the Hilton Head Island Motoring Festival & Concours d'Elegance's Board of Directors. For the past five years, chef Erin Moore and her students have planned, prepared and served lunches to volunteers at the annual automobile showcase, as well as assisting in the VIP area.
