The Students Against Destructive Decisions Club is collecting magazines for the waiting rooms at Beaufort Memorial Hospital and for local nursing homes. Magazines can be left in the front office with Mrs. Grooms. The Athletic Boosters Club is selling BCHS T-shirts for $12; crewneck sweatshirts for $20 and hoodies for $25. Seventh-grader Alexander Mazzeo has been selected to represent the USA at the 30th International Lake Garda Optimist regatta in Italy in March. Last year, more than 950 optimists from more than 40 countries participated in the regatta.
The school finished third overall at the S.C. Independent School Association spelling bee. In addition, school contestants finished fourth or better in six out of seven grade levels. Sixth-grader Quinn Fleming and eighth-grader Preston Coleman will be going to the state spelling bee Feb. 13.
The Parents Association meets at 8:05 a.m. Thursday in the Learning Center conference room.
Beaufort County School District
Each summer the district hosts the largest Migrant Education Program in South Carolina. It provides educational services for school-aged youngsters at St. Helena Elementary School and for older students directly at the migrant camps. Students are taught basic English, math, health and life skills. School supplies and hotel-sized toiletries are needed for the welcome packages for older students. Whale Branch Elementary School
Fourth-grader Darrion McDaniel has been chosen as a finalist in the 2013 Future Chefs Culinary Competition Feb. 15. He will be judged on originality, ease of preparation, kid-appeal, healthy attributes, use of featured ingredients and presentation. The winner will go on to the national competition.
