A Hardeeville woman was charged with driving under the influence Saturday after she woke up in a creek at the end of Hickory Trace in Bluffton in her upside down car.
The 32-year-old woman told police she had been assaulted, but could not remember anything, according to a Bluffton Police Department news release.
Under questioning by officers, she said she had awoken in a puddle inside her car.
The woman had slurred speech, glassy eyes and smelled of alcohol, the release said. Officers later found her vehicle upside down in the creek in Old Town.
Never miss a local story.
The woman said she remembered getting into her car and driving but nothing after that, the release said.
Investigators determined she drove down Lawrence Street and onto Hickory Trace before driving off a 22-foot ravine. The assault allegations were unfounded, the release said.
She was taken to the hospital for her injuries and treated. Testing later showed she had a blood-alcohol level of .25.
She was taken to the Beaufort County Detention Center and released Sunday.
