A tourist told a deputy he was just "showing off" when he revved his engine and sped down a Hilton Head Island road Wednesday afternoon, right beside the officer's patrol car.
The 27-year-old St. Louis man and Beaufort County Sheriff's Office deputy had just turned onto Pope Avenue from Cordillo Parkway at 8:30 p.m. when the suspect revved his black 2014 Corvette and quickly accelerated, reaching speeds of more than 80 mph, according to an incident report.
The deputy pulled over the Corvette, the report said. The driver said he was vacationing on Hilton Head and didn't think his driving was "that reckless."
He was cited for reckless driving and having an open container of alcohol in the vehicle. He was released from the Beaufort County Detention Center on $770.50 bail.
