A man with medical bandages covering his eye and hand robbed a Hilton Head Island bank Tuesday afternoon, according to the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office.
No one was injured in the incident at the SunTrust Bank on Lafayette Place -- the fifth bank robbery in Beaufort County this summer.
At about 3:15 p.m., the suspect entered the bank, jumped over the counter and demanded money, the Sheriff's Office said. After stealing an undisclosed amount of cash, the man ran toward the nearby Festival Centre at Indigo Park.
He was described as 30 to 39 years old, black, stocky, about 5-foot-8, wearing a white polo shirt with blue stripes and a blue baseball hat with a gold "W" on the front. He also had bandages over his left eye and on one hand.
No customers were inside the bank.
The suspect did not display a weapon, and deputies are unsure whether he is armed.
By about 4:30 p.m., the Sheriff's Office K-9 Tracking Team had finished searching the area but did not find the suspect.
The Sheriff's Office is also still searching for the suspects in four other recent bank robberies, according to Lt. Bill Neill, who said there was no clear reason for the spike in heists.
"You get sometimes a rash of things," Neill said. "It's just a little hard to say why."
