An 8-year-old boy drowned in a Bluffton pool Monday morning, according to a Bluffton Police Department news release.
Gavin Quance was pulled from a family pool at 6 Augustine Road at about 10 a.m. by his mother, who called 911 and attempted CPR, the release said.
Bluffton police officers continued CPR until rescue workers arrived.
Quance was taken to Coastal Carolina Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, the release said. His body was then taken to the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston for an autopsy, according to Beaufort County Coroner Ed Allen.
Never miss a local story.
Quance knows how to swim and was alone in the pool at the time, according to Bluffton police Maj. Joseph Manning. His mother was coming in and out of the house at the time, and when she checked the pool, she found Quance floating face down, he said.
Responders did not find any visible injuries on Quance, in the event he had slipped and fallen near the pool, and police were still investigating the drowning Monday evening.
"It was a tragic accident," Manning said. "Our victim advocate and chaplain has been with (his parents) most of the afternoon."
The Bluffton Township Fire District, which also answered the 911 call, has responded to few drownings or injuries at family pools in recent years, district spokesman Randy Hunter said.
